Kazo City takes pride in being the leading producer of carp streamers in Japan and is known as the City of Carp Streamers. Here, a gigantic carp streamer totaling 100 m (nearly 330 feet) in length is flown during the month of May. It is an incredible sight to see this vibrantly colored carp streamer wafting magnificently against the clear blue sky.

Kazo City’s carp streamer industry has its roots in the early Meiji era, when artisans whose main product was paper lanterns or umbrellas created the streamers as a sideline. In those days, they were known as seasonal goods sellers, because they made and sold not just carp streamers but also other seasonal items such as Hina dolls.

Following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the seasonal goods sellers in the suburbs of Tokyo declined precipitously. Wholesale dealers from the city then came out to Kazo to secure their stock from the seasonal goods sellers there and, impressed by the quality of the carp streamers, they placed floods of orders.

The 100-meter long Jumbo Carp Streamer was first made in 1988 and flown publicly for the first time at the 1st Annual Kazo Residents’ Peace Festival the following year. Since then, a Jumbo Carp Streamer has been flown at each annual Kazo Residents’ Peace Festival. The current Jumbo Carp Streamer is the fourth of its kind and was completed in 2014.

To fly a Jumbo Carp Streamer, we begin by assembling the mouth ring of the streamer. This mouth ring alone is 10 meters (over 32 feet) in diameter! The Jumbo Carp Streamer itself is altogether in a league of its own, being just longer than an American football field and weighing in at an impressive 330 kg (nearly 730 lbs.). Accordingly, it’s a huge task just to unroll it from its folded-up state. Once a large group of people has accomplished the job, the Jumbo Carp Streamer is then slowly hoisted up using a giant crane. As it billows out into the heavens, the people who have assembled at Tonegawa Kasenjiki raise a cheer all at once. It is a magnificent thing to see this vividly colored carp streamer drinking in the wind and wafting splendidly against the blue May sky.
