Since the end of the Meiji era (early 20th century), the ferrymen of excursion boats*1 surreptitiously worshiped a water deity and prayed for safe harbors, as well as held memorial services for those drowned. This is believed to have been the start of this festival. In 1924, Nagatoro was designated as a nationally scenic location and a natural monument, leading to the place becoming known nationwide. The Nagatoro Funadama Festival, which had been meticulously practiced for all those years as a rite to the water deity, grew into a vast and luxurious affair in which many people have come to throng.

Around sunset, 1,000 lanterns are installed along the gentle flows of the Arakawa River. This marks the start of the festival. Mantosen, boats heaped high with lanterns, ply their way along the docks and river, saying a prayer for maritime safety.

As night grows on, over 3,500 fireworks are launched from the opposite bank, illuminating Nagatoro in color.

With a nationally-designated natural monument as its backdrop, this festival sees the light of lanterns in the river, the stirring sight of the boats, and the fireworks in the sky coming together to create a harmony of beauty that will take your breath away.
